The First Responders Recreation Center opened yesterday with two tables setup for play. But the story is not all good.
At the highest level of table tennis you won’t find any American names. And the closest ones to the top were all born and raised elsewhere. The reason is that almost all of us started playing in a basement with grossly inadequate space. You can’t learn how to play if you don’t have enough room to swing. The table tennis tables in the First Responders Recreation Center were setup to duplicate these cramped basement conditions. It is completely inadequate for serious competition. How much space is needed?
Here in the Villages the major recreation centers setup six table tennis tables in the biggest rooms. This provides adequate space. At Laurel Manor they set up eight tables. We need the extra tables for the crowds but the width between tables is too small. We have players running into walls and one another frequently. At the First Responders Recreation Center only the largest room can be used for serious play though they currently do not plan to use that room. So go to First Responders only if you are interested in basement ping pong.
